Nice place to visit, but very expensive. Hearty people, clean and often harsh climate, but not much sunshine up north. No liquor stores, but they have shops that sell stills and supplies to make your own. As a visitor I can't speak to social programs and the overall quality of living, other than saying everyone seemed to be very happy. I didn't see anyone that seemed destitute or not dressed well. I didn't try any of the local food, other than what was served in the O Mess at Varnes NAF Base. Eggs were scarce and only served on Sunday in the mess. Smoked salmon was plentiful, with heaping platters at Sunday brunch. It was the first time I'd seen fish paste in tubes. On weekdays only breakfast and dinner were served. They put out plenty of bread, cheese, and cold cuts so the pilots could make sandwiches for their noon meal. We could learn a lot from them, but to convert to their socialist taxation would be too much of a culture shock IMO for the US.
