He likely would have found the means to kill even if the AF hadn't screwed up - if they did. That's one of the larger problems - stopping people that are inclined to kill. They are using vehicles and will likely continue to improvise to carry out their bad acts. Outlawing things is just a measure to make it more difficult, but will never fully prevent. Look at how many break the law in countless ways every day. Someone will find a way and is not really concerned about breaking the law. Thanks for sharing.

CWO3 (Join to see) 100% agree with your post, but military and Air Force specifically should not make it any easier. Domestic violence and firearms never mix well. Having a DV charge on your record will prevent any "legal" firearm purchase. The breakdown in military justice to civilian law enforcement is a problem. I just hope this can be corrected, and not fall through the cracks again.

MSgt C Madd - Lots of fault here by many parties. That's usually the low lying fruit when these things happen - who can we blame? Many besides AF screwed the pooch with this one. For the sake of the seller I just hope they didn't pencil-whip the check. It won't go well if they did. Blame may help finding fault and fixing it, but if it stops at blame it never gets fixed. There is a process in place but it appears it was not followed in this case. Besides the character of his discharge was the mental health issue(s), domestic violence and escape from mental health facility. He should have been flagged in many ways. If he was and the checks were falsified or ignored it snowballs.

My Uncle spent 27 years as an OSI agent. He is rolling over in his grave. What a travesty

Does it really matter? He could have obtained a gun illegally. People bent on committing a crime aren't dissuaded by gun control laws. That's why it's important that law abiding citizens have the right to arm themselves, to defend themselves.

The reality is that once he made the decision to kill and to be willing to die (kill himself) in the process, the gun was a tool, his mind had become the weapon. He would have stolen a gun, bought one on the street or some other way. It is very hard, almost impossible, to identify and stop these sorts of people based upon our current legal and law enforcement systems.
