But it doesn't have the capability or survivability of the A10.

LTC (Join to see) Not even close. I would like to see them make a CAS squadron. Anchored by A-10s, but use the light aircraft as supplemental forces. Of course, they would need to be escorted in by fighters.

Agreed LTC (Join to see) and SSgt (Join to see) . But the AF is assuming that these aircraft will work in a low air threat environment. Few to no MANPADS and no larger SAMs or opposing air forces. Fighter escort not needed as no air-to-air opposition. For Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) environments like Iraq / Syria and Afghanistan, there may be an excellent payoff for using these aircraft. Shame that the OV-10 Bronco isn't competing, but then again it wouldn't be much of a competition.

To many of these thin skinned aircraft even small arms fire is deadly. The engines and cockpit on the A10 is protected.
