The Air Force said it hasn’t yet determined the nature of the gunshot, describing it as an isolated incident that does not pose a threat to the base or community.
The service purchased some 125,000 M18s from Sig Sauer for $22 million in 2020 to replace the M9 pistol it had used since 1985. Sig, which manufactures the M18 for all branches of the U.S. military, notes on its website that the firearm is equipped with a manual safety.

With all guns, it is a bad assumption to assume they are totally "drop safe". I love SIG pistols but I had one that was advertised as "drop safe". It fell one day & fired. I sent it back tobthe factory & they returned it to me stating "they could find nothing wrong with the gun." Be careful out there. Best not to leave a round chambered unless required for duty.

LTC Rodney Joye I only have two handguns that have manual safety’s. My wheel guns are fully loaded without safety’s, my Glocks don’t have safety’s. All are carried with a round in the chamber. I don’t rely on manual safeties.

This is a known problem with this weapon, and it is unfortunate that the airmen placed the weapon down with the muzzle in his direction. This youtube video sounds accurate. https://youtu.be/ssNFf_bMjf8?si=gkQl_cQMKkDnMZak

Maj Robert Thornton - I love my double stack, single action 1911. I keep one in the pipe and release the hammer, only needing to manually cock the hammer if I need her. My only negligent misfire is with a Glock. I think my next big purchase will be a Staccato that uses Glock mags as I have carbines now that use Glock mags.

SrA John Monette Don't know the details of the AF incident. Will likely come out eventually. It Cn Happen with revolvers also. A former neighbor kept a loaded revovler on the nightstand & his wife knocked the gun off while cleaning. The gun fired & she was shot. Fortunately, she recovered.
