Give him a cough drop, and then some more sleep-aid. If they wouldn't kill people they wouldn't be put to sleep. They should consider themselves lucky that it's as humane as it is. They make mistakes sometimes but in spirit it's about as humane as they can get. Go to sleep, stop breathing, stop heart. That's a far cry from being fried, choked on cyanide, shot, or hung.
He pistol-whipped and shot a clerk that had a newborn child, and got better than he deserved. In years past even methods worse than some used this century were used. These included drowning, boiling in oil, being drawn and quartered; which is being drug behind a team of horses, hung and stretched and then slowly pulling your guts out while you're awake and cutting you into quarters for display around town. The guillotine is believed to cause the least pain but the politicians wouldn't dare bring it back because if they did heads would roll for sure. Give them a fair trial, with reasonable appeal, and then carry out sentence if that's what society wants. As to the morality of death penalty that's a different issue. From an economic stance it often costs more to kill them than to give them life without parole due to costs from various appeals specific to death, so there's that also.

If he hadn't killed someone he wouldn't have been in that situation to begin with. No sympathy.
In this day and age there's no reason to have people sitting on the row for decades. If you get sentenced to death you get 30 days to appeal and 120 from then to have the appeal resolved. After that one appeal, good night sweetheart.
