Thanks for honoring the memory of USMC LT Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman, Jr. who was awarded the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal posthumously and in absentia for his actions on Tarawa.
In the tropical heat it made sense to bury the dead quickly and he was buried with 34 other dead marines.
Thank God for History Flight the NGO that funds their own search efforts for American MIA servicemen around the world in coordination with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency of the US Government. I am glad that his grandson made the trip and was there when "Sandy" Bonnyman's remains were identified.
