500k employees and laying off a few 100 is not an issue. I'd look at the attrition rate at Amazon. The Center of Gravity for Amazon is trained personnel.

My guess would be they are laying off folks they inherited through acquisitions... like Whole Foods

They could be. I toured a distribution center near me and I was surprised by the operation. It is like doing a tour down range. I don't see how they keep their personnel doing repetitive work for 10 hrs.
