The Culture series (by Iain Banks) and the Agent Cormac series (by Neal Asher) vie for top spot in my lexicon, for sci-fi. For fantasy, the Malazan series (by Steven Erikson) resides firmly at the top, even over GoT.

MSG Mark Million - All excellent authors, but the stature they achieved is not limited solely to them - others who come after can achieve those heights, too, and the authors I've named, have, imo.
