Agree with the writer that we employ our forces in ways that are questionable. Military force should only be one tool of many in our arsenal. Nation building and OOTW usually become very costly and often don't end well. We do need to maintain our existing equipment for valid deployments and stay current with evolving technology though. I've read that USMC aviation is in pretty bad shape; especially CH-53 helos and F/A 18 aircraft. Unless we change our concept of ops we must maintain the equipment we currently have in our inventory. I defer to those better qualified but I think we tend to buy very expensive new items vice upgrading. An example of this is the F-35 vs upgrading the F-22's. It's a huge price tag to preserve our National Security and one that must be paid, but we have to get much smarter with strategy, purchasing, and spending overall if we ever hope to get a grasp on the massive defense budget.
