Here we go again, yet another attack on a dead veteran. You'd think these sleuths would delve deep into guys records while they are alive and able to defend themselves. What makes me leery of them is the fact that none of this guys buddies or leaders cried foul on his records, but an outsider picks them apart.

CSM Richard StCyr - The really sad part about this is that the original article is really a piece of dung. Another thing is that the authors did an extremely poor job of delving into the records. I will not go into the SS part of this because at the present time, I do not have enough information. However, I will delve into the issue of the BS and BS w/V. In this I will use the exact same information that the authors supposedly used, that was linked to the original article, both the DD 214 link which also includes a number of his evaluation reports, and the FOIA letter and documents link.
I find that there are a number of discrepancies to be found between the various documents presented. Just the Bronze Star alone, if you look at the dates of the evaluation reports and awards listed on them you would note that the first Bronze Star w/V is not listed, you will also find that there is a distinct discrepancy in regards to the 3rd Bronze Star w/V, with it being listed on his eval report as being awarded in the 2006-2007 time period and the citation shows that a 3rd one was awarded in 2009 for a period in 2008. This last discrepancy definitely leads me to believe that the 2009 award should have been for at least a 4th award.
My conclusion from just the information presented is as follows:
Bronze Star w/V - 1st Award 2004 - Down graded SS. Certificate/DG Memo Jun 06
Bronze Star - 1st Award 2004-2005 - Award Citation
Bronze Star w/V - 2nd Award 2005-2006 - 05-06 Eval Report
Bronze Star w/V - 3rd Award 2006-2007 - 06-07 Eval Report (Stated only as BS w/V)
Bronze Star w/V - 4th Award 2008 - 2009 Award Certificate (Shown on Certificate as 3rd Award)
To me that represents 5 Bronze Stars with 4 having the w/V device.
Considering the information provided, I believe that some individuals can not count or do a proper audit to request the appropriate information through the FOIA.

SSG Robert Webster - Thanks Robert, I often question folks who are titled "independent researchers" as the authors of the last couple of expose' articles have been; level of expertise and their motive in playing "Gotcha".
I had the opportunity to work at the casualty assistance office on the VA work study program, and part of the job was building shadow boxes for the families of repatriated MIA Soldiers and active KIA. My experience there reviewing records and as CSM for two battalions and a BDE was and is that the DD214s and ERBs frequently didn't add up to what the Soldiers had on file and if anything the 214s tend to understate what Soldiers have earned and are entitled to.
The only good I think that could come out of the nonsense is perhaps Soldiers and Leaders will pay closer attention to their records.

CSM Richard StCyr - I have seen these "independent" researchers on the internet, they are the flat earth people, the people who prove that there was no moon landing and the people who "prove" that 9/11 was an inside job by the CIA! they really out there never seen so many idiots in the same place!

I can't recall having ANY input on the preparation of my DD 214. I remember seeing it for the firstvtime, already prepared, at outprocessing.

Yes SGT James Roth I had the same experience although I believe I reviewed it also for any discrepancies prior to signing.

It was 10 years before I really looked at it. When I did, I found two medals missing. I thought that maybe my memory was faulty, so I dug out my box of old Army stuff and found certificates and orders matched my memory. I guess I should have been more diligent back in 1992. I haven't bothered to get it corrected. I'm not sure it matters that much.

MSgt (Join to see) - correct, reviewed before signing. If there was an error, it was verified and then adjusted.

This is the DD214 that the folks at thisainthell.us received when they requested it after getting wind of this author posing this article. I read the 214. There is listed, 2 Silvers and 5 Bronzes for Valor.

MSG (Join to see) - No Jonn L of TAH hell made a comment saying that that is what these people are trying to say that the 214 does not match Navy Records. The guy's not here to defend himself and this should just be put behind us he did one many world not have. I confused and with you DD 214 has this and records have that well now what about all the other guy's that claim that same story. This is just bad and VETS need to think before they go after other Vets. The guy that started it was some COL.

What is interesting about this particular DD 214 (they way that I read it) is that it actually shows 6 Bronze Stars w/V. Note that it shows one (1) - Bronze Star (w/V) and then it shows five (5) - Bronze Star (w/V)(5). That alone is a major discrepancy with the DD 214. It should show one of the following IAW all of the current reports:
Bronze Star (w/V)(3) or Bronze Star (w/V)(5)
I also have a problem with the information as released in the FOIA request - where is the rest of the supporting documentation just for the ones that are mentioned or shown in the release?
