So, you went to a foreign combat zone to kill people and now you're tired of it and want to go home? Fuck you. You should have thought about having an exit plan before you went. Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on anyone else's part.

The only time I ever got hurt was when I decided to be the good guy and give the benefit of the doubt to some unknown asshole. SF has a mission and that mission requires focus and the limited resources they have. If you're a contractor then the contractors need to get you out. If you're over there on your dime get yourself out. I see no need for the SF to delay or modify a mission to accommodate John Rambo wannabees.

I understand that the SF guys don't have the time or resources to babysit some volunteer US fighters who are done volunteering, but they should probably be able to keep them nearby until they have something going near the US embassy which could then take care of the US citizens properly.

Or not.
"...the U.S. State Department had told the two Americans to seek assistance from a U.S. military base in Syria."

I don't think we have an active embassy in the country. I believe it closed in 2012 and has not reopened. The embassy website says, "U.S. citizens in Syria who seek consular services should contact the U.S. Interests Section of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus". I'm not sure they would get any real help there.
