This has been on the radar for a while. The development of electronic hands and now "tactile" skin, along with surgical attachments within the nerve system of recent amputees has been going on at Johns Hopkins for several years. It's still a long way from going out to the general amputee public. Also, it would be a bit difficult to navigate life using VR goggles all the time in order to achieve the full sensory that the prosthetic is actually part of the body.
I'd be happier if they could figure out how to stop phantom pain...like that damned shooting pain that starts at the end of the stump and blows out the end of your limb pain. Drives me nuts after a couple of days.
