It pays to teach and know history.
I show my kids the program “The Men Who Built America”. While it gets many of the details wrong, it focuses on how Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnagie, Morgan, etc. got rich and America was pushed forward industrially. It also has businessmen like, Mark Cuban, Trump, Carly Fiorina, etc. talking about the business tactics and drive.
In it, one of them, might have been pre-President Trump, talked about how Rockefeller brought down Vanderbilt. 1) he used his business allies as his proxy to build pressure on Vanderbilt, 2) he got Vanderbilt’s allies to turn on him for a bigger piece of his pie, 3) when he got Vanderbilt to the negotiating table, he showed him that with any “wriggling” by Vanderbilt and he (Rockefeller) was willing to walk away from the deal, 4) which in turn made Vanderbilt realize how much HE had to lose and Vanderbilt BEGGED Rockefeller to come back to the table. That allowed 5) Rockefeller to come out with a deal twice as good as he would otherwise have had.
Now......history repeats itself.
Trump 1) used Japan and South Korea as his proxy in building pressure on Vanderbilt, er Kim Jong-un, 2) got Jong-un’s Allies (China) to turn on him for a bigger piece of the American pie, 3) when he got North Korea to the negotiating table, he showed him that any “wriggling” (in this case, NK propaganda) by NK and he (Trump) was willing to walk away from the deal, 4) which in turn made Jong-un realize how much he had to lose and BEG Trump to come back to the table.
Do you think this, like Rockefeller, will 5) allow Trump to come out with a deal twice as good as he otherwise would have had?
It’s as easy to see as a book. Dunno why the media is getting in such a fuss; to Trump, or any big businessman, this is Negotiating Plan #1. Guarantee you Mark Cuban or any of the other Shark Tank folks are laughing at getting to watch it happen.

Just an aside... i worked for Carly Fiorina at HP (not a direct report) and while she did HP a lot of good, there’s back-stories (there always are).
Nonetheless, i would’ve voted for her over Trump.
Having said that, i’m content with the current leadership.
