Sad part of hostilities in this part of the world is the loss of monuments and artifacts. But guess this has been going on for thousands of years; one empire builds on the ruins of another.

doesn't the UN have something for this? UNESCO sites etc?

how's that working out? Palmyra? The Afghan Buddhas?
