Islam, at it's root, really is a peaceful religion with a good message; unfortunately all of that changed around the 14th century with the end of the Golden Age of Islam. There was a movement to make Islam more than just a religion and the ultra conservatives began implementing it into government and it has evolved into what it is today in the Middle East. There is a movement, though admittedly small at this point, to take Islam back from the fundamentalists and revive it as it once was. Most of those involved in this reformation are Western Muslims, and many in the Middle East look down upon them as heretics. Until they have their own version of Martin Luther nailing a thesis on the Mosque in Mecca, I don't think we will see any truly meaningful changes.
