COL Lee Flemming - We have a long tradition of the citizen soldier . . . who serves for a discrete period of time . . . then leaves the service to resume his / her civilian responsibilities . . . including speaking out about politics / economics / national security matters . . . with authority derived in part from many years of experience in military life. To cut these people off is contrary to long tradition . . . and excludes valuable opinions. You may muzzle serving officers . . . but not retired military personnel. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

Capt Tom Brown - "Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut." Sandy, found one, and it's not me. My vision is quite good, especially when identifying motives.

I believe upon receipt of a DD214 you are a private citizen. Many may ask how private one may be with the knowledge obtained during military service. A valid question it is. But the thought of denying prior servicemen and women their right to support a politician is purely unconstitutional. Furthermore, utilizing the knowledge, experience, and wisdom of these military leaders in the political realm ultimately benefits society. They aren't leeches. I'd feel honored to be considered with such regard by the candidate I support.

COL Lee Flemming great read and share, in contrast to GA Eisenhower I am glad he spoke up for the nation and used his experience. Times are different nowadays, but I think it's some good points to speaking out as Generals/Admirals!

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I am not sure times are that different. Former Generals and officers continue to run for office, and as you can see Generals disagree on roles they should assume in open political debate. The fact is that some long term SM want to continue their service to the nation and view their involvement as an extension of military life.
