I suspect that the average service member is better traveled than the average civilian, but does that make us more aware of our surroundings? I once knew a captain who had served a tour of duty in Germany and I had designs of applying to be stationed there. When I asked him what it was like, he responded with a shrug and "The PXs weren't all that great." Really? Thus, I must modify my opinion and say that I suspect service members are more aware if they actually leave the post when stationed overseas...

We called those guy barracks rats. I had many German friends. One was a group of Polizei. Good guys to have on your side !

Absolutely more aware if they actually left post, and not to places just on the other side of the fence line that catered to American service members.
I was lucky as a dependent that my stepdad like to travel. We went all over Panama as well as a memorable road trip to Costa Rica that I liken to an Indiana Jones adventure. Even in the States we traveled much of the Southeast.
When I did my tours in Turkey and England I did what I like to think of as a lot of sight seeing "far" from the influence of the base. I drug several guys out on day trips that otherwise would have been one of those that never left base or only went just outside of the wire.
