Good Red Friday morning and Happy Fiscal New Year, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "The Central Milky Way from Lagoon to Pipe." Amateur astrophotographer Brazilian Gabriel Santos captured this image of the Milky Way from the Lagoon Nebula (M8, brightest on left) to the Pipe Nebula (center right. He shares this commentary from his notes on astrobin.com:
"This image presents a beautiful colorful extremely wide field in the centre of the Milky Way. The contrast of the old yellow partially-unresolved stars of the Milky Way, the dark clouds of dust, the bright ionized gas and the bright young stars make a exquisite composition. This image could fit more than 30 full moons in its diagonal, and was taken with an ordinary 135mm photographic lens and DSLR camera atop a simple tracking mount. I was fascinated with the strong golden hue that emanates from the Milky Way, in a visually pleasant diagonal framing, making it a beautiful stellar landscape, which I cannot help but see it as a stunning stellar tapestry."
