APOD: 2022 May 22 - A Large Tsunami Shock Wave on the Sun

Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the Twofer+1 May 24th edition (I'm playing catch-up today) of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "A Large Tsunami Shock Wave on the Sun." Tsunamis are not just an earthly phenomenon. This 2006 animated image shows what appears to be a shock wave generated by a solar flare. In 2009, NASA's two Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft were oriented such that they could confirm what scientists thought they were seeing--a giant wave of hot plasma and magnetism: one over 62,000 miles high moving at over 500,000 miles per hour. A tsunami indeed.
