Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to this edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for January 26, 2025.

I thought the APOD from January 24th was impressive...but then this image shows up. What a difference a couple of days makes. Both were taken at the Paranal Observatory in Chilé. The nucleus of Comet G3 ATLAS is believed to have broken up about two weeks ago. If so, that could explain the number of distinct tails we can see. Regardless, the Southern Hemisphere has been treated to quite a show in January 2025.

Imagine being able to harvest a stream of benzine or methane blasting out of something like that...into a big old fuel bladder.....although that's more likely water I think...
