I'm of two minds on this. I don't like leaving anything exposed, but the kernel doesn't store anything sensative. As long as the kernel is properly locked down, this can actually benefit all those iPhone fanboys.

It's "shared source". I think this is their response to all the headlines that blasted OS X for being #1 on the CVE list last year. They're learning that proprietary means less eyes. Less eyes mean less chances to find it, which is arguably worse than everyone being able to see it and contribute fork requests.
