I'm going to refrain from too much theorizing on this one until all the facts are out. An M4 isn't a nuclear weapon (nor the average Cadet a highly-trained operative), and I'm pretty sure someone who could get into the Point wouldn't have much difficulty obtaining something of near parity (I'm not convinced three-round burst is a huge force multiplier for a single, inexperienced shooter at any rate) anyway if that was their goal. Lots of people have similar weapons and do no harm...so please; let's not make it about the weapon. My only concern is why they left, and why they stole their weapon when doing so; that "could" indicate something more nefarious than a kid just deciding they were done with Hell on the Hudson. I'm sure the Army has lots of intel on this Cadet...they know their home of record, have done psychological profiling on them, have run physicals, and have the testimonies of hundreds of classmates, instructors, and other trained professionals to guide them in their search and response. If their goal is to harm themselves...and we shouldn't/can't rule that out...the clock is running. If they intend to do others harm, there will be a target, and again-there's more information here likely to draw from, than in other cases. Ultimately, it may simply be a case of delusions of grandeur, and they're going to find this kid camped out, half-frozen somewhere in the New York woodlands...Lord, I hope that's all this is.
