This is a bit long, but indicates where Amazon is heading, along with other large warehouse operations. And Wendies ordered a bunch of automated kiosks to replace front end employee costs, jury out on that one.

Is it because robots don't contribute to productivity or because economists haven't yet figured out how to measure their effectiveness?

Probably a little of both. One thing about productivity statistics is they look at widgets coming out the door, doesn't matter who or what made that widget.
