In order to progress as fast and as far as they did on such a complex device, the Soviets would have had to have deeply involved spies in the Manhattan Project. I would be stunned if there wasn't more than known, just due to the difficulty in transmitting so much extremely guarded data out.

Totally agree and IMO they stayed around a while. Beyond the atomic bomb they brought hydrogen bomb and other technology around much faster than their capabilities would indicate.
