Spouses can be eligible understand certain circumstances. If the veteran is rated at 100% P&T or TDIU P&T a spouse can receive CHAMPVA. If a spouse receives CHAMPVA and the VA nearest you participates in the CITI program, the spouse can receive their medical care through the VA to include medications. That said, when the spouse turns age 65, they must have enrolled in Medicare which becomes primary. At this time the spouse can no longer receive care through the VA. Same applies to anyone under age 65 but on Medicare. Medicare is primary so they cannot obtain their care through the VA. Also, a spouse is entitled to "DIC" through the VA under certain circumstances such as if the service member dies while on active duty or the veteran dies due to a service connected disability. Or the veteran dies after being 100% P&T/TDIU P&T for 10 years or more AND the spouse was married to the veteran for 1 year or longer prior to death. (SEE VA regulations for both, benefits and DIC)
