I had a discectomy last August because of a herniated L1/L2 and my neurosurgeon says that the sit-ups only make my lower back worse

I don't doubt it sir. Whereas in the gym you can use lower weights to maintain your strength and slowly build the muscles again in your back.

SFC William Johnson - Good point. Deadlifts are the reason my hip and back pain don't return often.
