My uncle was an Army Air Corps lieutenant/pilot prior to WWII. He said that officers in those days followed the obituaries closely to see the rank of those who died inasmuch as that was the only way of rising in the ranks at that time.

My father was a army air corp bombardier. Draftee. I met him once. He was a drunk. Drank aqua velva if he did not have any beer or vodka. He abandoned my mother in 1950.
