I agree with the idea of meeting standards or being sent packing. However it should apply to all standards equally. Lets take the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) for example. How many personnel have you seen who have not passed or taken and APFT multiple times. The regs. give clear guidance on steps to be taken and after all steps have run their course and the Soldier still fails they should be shown the door. Regardless of rank, MOS, or duty position. Also if we are going to require a school or some sort of training to be completed in a given time frame for a Soldier to make or keep a given rank there needs to be enough classes for them to attend said training in more than enough time.

I had a LOT of issues trying to get an ALC slot when I was an E-6. When I finally did a get a slot it conflicted with the beginning of a deployment so I had to cancel the reservation. They rescheduled it a little while later, BUT they scheduled me for a date that would have fallen at the tail end of the deployment so I had to cancel yet again. When I finally received another slot it was more than a year later. Under this criteria I probably would have received the boot. If you're going to boot Soldiers for not attending their respective NCOES you have to make sure they have actually been afforded the opportunity to do so within a timely manner.

I absolutely agree with you on this. I have an E-6 that came to the unit before we deployed. Same situation happened to him. He was trying to get a date for SLC but could not go because of the deployment. He has spent half of his career deployed which made it extremely difficult for him to get into classes. I feel as though standards do need to be enforced better, but as leaders within the organization we have to make sure we offer the opportunity to progress. They have to be offered the opportunity.

There is no one so critical to the mission that a required professional development course should be postponed or cancelled.

Do they have to pay back and reenlistment bonuses?

I would assume so as you didn't fulfill what is in your contract. Say you enlist with a bonus for one MOS or job code and fail out, they don't want to give you a bonus if you're in an overstocked MOS. At least from, what I've seen and heard.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - Its been a long time, but it seems that they would have a good case that it wasn't a matter of choice. It would be a factor what the standards were when the reenlistment occurred.

I completely agree that it needs to be the standards at the moment of reenlistment.
