A little known bit of history. My uncle's remains are still there. Unfortunately, my grandparents never knew exactly what happened to him. I've met relatives of two other soldiers who were lost in the battle and actually spoke to a survivor. I'm really glad the true story of the 31st RCT finally got told.

Thank you for posting this. For years I've heard stories about the Army's role in covering 1st Marine Division's retreat from Chosin Reservoir but have never seen it documented so well. The sacrifice of two 7th ID Infantry Battalions to protect a whole Division's pull-out may make military sense but the way information was released by the Navy Department was disgraceful.
