How does this recruit's religion tie into the story other than to stir up controversy? Sounds like he was treated like any other recruit.. I'm honestly torn. Boot camp is supposed to be physically, mentally, and emotionally difficult. At what point, if we haven't already reached it, will everyone graduate, regardless if they "participate" or not. Navy RTC has changed. RDCs (DIs) are not supposed to swear or yell. They can't PT you individually. There is a lot they aren't supposed to do.. Now, do all RDCs honor that? No. I can attest to that personally. However, I feel that today's boot camp has become incredibly softer than it once was. I am getting brand new Sailors right out of boot camp with attitude and disciplinary problems. I tell them to sweep and they say, "Ugh.. why do I have to sweep?" They are E2s... Back talking an E5/E6. This is unacceptable. I am not saying what happened here is right, but some people do not have what it takes to serve. If bootcamp is too much for someone, how do we expect them to handle being in a firefight? When you're shot and bleeding out in the open, screaming, covered in blood, and you look to your right and yell for help, this person will probably freeze and cover their eyes and ears - waiting for you to die.. Unacceptable. Bootcamp is a training program and we should remember that there is a NEED for attrition. Not everyone should be serving. I've seen so many people in the Navy today that should by NO means be serving. They either have serious health issues or mental issues that should have disqualified them.. Maybe it's time for our senior leadership to take a good hard look at the basics - bootcamp - and reassess what that means and what it's designed to do. On a side note, how was this recruit even able to jump? Every window was locked at RTC. Outside of hanging yourself with your own bedsheets, suicide was a pretty hard thing to attempt.
