He was a Hollywood actor after he achieved fame for his heroics. The War Department (dang I'd wish we'd change the name back) couldn't afford to have him captured or killed in the line of duty. So he spend the rest of WWII, just doing promotional appearances around the country to inform US citizens about the war effort & help with recruiting.
