I used his story to help teach Cub Scouts about what it meant that a Scout is Brave. It doesn't mean having no fear but rather doing what is right or necessary in spite of fear. But, I have often wondered in his case if he acted in spite of fear. I have heard that he was often confused when award citations were read later explaining that he had no memory of the action. It may be that he had been in a fugue state during the most frightful situations.

Paraphrasing another MOH recipient, John Basilone, among many others "Anyone who isn't afraid in combat is insane, lying, or both." Bravery is not the absence of fear, but getting things done in spite of it.

What an amazing man, I was once told he said he wasn't a hero he was just completing the mission! Never found anything that proved this true but wow just wow!
