I was in the army National Guard when they started dictating college and different levels of degrees to stay in and get promotions. The justification was, the Army was getting more technical and required a higher degree of education to perform the military mission. Both the Army and Air Force started granting AA, AS, AAPS degrees shorty after that when the recommendations for college credits were not being honored by Colleges and Universities and the Airmen and Soldiers were not meeting the new requirements.

And, yet, there were no enlisted military college for them. The military academies and post graduate levels of education were for Officers as were many of the College and University completion and graduate programs outside the military were. So, for decades, there was a separation between the degrees, opportunities, and acceptance of education level between officers and enlisted. Now, there HAVE been some changes.

But, the question is, why pay an officer salary for a degree when you can keep the enlisted having to have higher and higher degrees and pay them less in pay, benefits, and opportunities for getting that education into your service? The officer corps has built in education opportunities and programs paid for by the military. The enlisted does not. They are expected to get those degrees on their own, use education funds, do it part time while working full time, or use their VA education benefits.

Again, I will say, after twenty years, things are changing for the better for the enlisted to gain their required degree to stay in and get promoted. But, as with most things that cost money and you have a different group controlling the funding and management, they have not changed enough.

If you do not want senior NCO's to have the same or higher degrees then the officers, then start promoting to officer from the troops. Or, make more CWO's! But, that would require an act of Congress!

This should be a Masters degree. After all, Senior NCO's required to have a degree already to make it to this rank. Right?
