Yamamoto may not have been no dummy, but he had to know the crap he stepped in. He had almost finite military resources. Their logistics support to the islands they held were somewhat limited at the start of the war and went to minimal very quickly after our industrial strength went to full capacity. A capacity the Japanese could never match.
Midway saw the Japanese naval air arm almost totally destroyed and those carriers were never replaced, whereas ours were and then some.
