On this day so long ago the highest ranking American officer died in combat PO2 Mark Saffell. CSA GEN Albert Sydney Johnson was shot in the leg which hit an artery and he bled out on the battlefield. He had been moving with his men in battle when he was shot. 60cal bullets had a devastating effect. After Johnston's death CSA GEN P.G.T. Beauregard assumed command of Confederate forces.
Here is a famous paining titled the Hornets Nest from the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing otherwise known the Battle of Shiloh after the Shiloh Church where Sherman had his headquarters.

I went there when I was a kid. Makes you wonder had Johnson lived if the outcome would have been different

PO2 Mark Saffell - FYI I misspelled A.S. Jonhston's name and corrected it. In honor of him I plan on posting which Civil War officers were part of the West Point Class of 1826 when he graduated which was two years before Jefferson Davis graduated.

any time. I love Civil War History and the names they had for areas. Its funny, I believe the South called this the Battle of Pittsburg Landing and the North called it the Battle of Shiloh.

As a kid the names they had for different areas was cool to us, but when you look at how many died at those places its an eye opener. I would love to explore that area with a metal detector, but if you get caught doing that your liable to be added to people shot...LOL they don't take to kindly to metal detectors there.
