Been there. Took my youngest daughter to see the place about eight years ago. Kind of out of the way and not well known.

This is a 10 minute drive from our house. I was out there in April. (The gates are wide open all day for walkers and bicycles, no fees.) I had a book on the battle and walked the line on Bloody Hill. I'm absolutely convinced the cannons representing DuBois' Battery are misplaced by about 100 yards. As it now sets, there is considerable dead ground about 50 yards in front of it, and it could not cover the front of the 1st Kansas Inf Regt. Move the battery, and the 1st Kansas would also be moved up one ravine further south. There has been a lot of controversy concerning the site of Lyon's death over the years, he died while leading a 1st Kansas counter attack. The new position of the 1st Kansas, to line up with the moved DuBois' Battery, would cause the traditional site of Lyon's death to make a lot more sense.

Anyway, I'm waiting to talk with the Park Rangers when it reopens, and then maybe I will get in touch with the guy who "wrote the book," who is here at least once a year.

Cheers.

Impressive share, Top. I wish I knew you when I visited the place a few years back. I'd have talked you into being a private tour guide.
