Have you ever shaved with a straight razor? Thinking about it? I was when Gillette began using "social injustice" as an advertising theme. That put me over the edge. So, I invested around $200 on a high quality razor, genuine leather strop, and whetstone (you can invest up to $500 on the razor alone but most of that is for a fancy handle). Luckily, I had already been purchasing high quality shaving soap, preshave oil, and shaving balm, and I have a good quality badger hair shaving brush. Thus, armed I began looking for instruction. 1. Slow down, way down.
2. One pass will do it. I stroke several times with a safety razor in the same spot and still have bristle. The straight razor will take it in one. If you stroke again and again, you'll be taking off layers of skin as you cut the hair down to the follicle.
3. Practice with a spoon handle. Yes, you read that correctly. You need to practice to build muscle memory and practicing with the razor is dangerous. Spoon handles are very dull
