I've used and somewhat like Tails, but I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised that BackTrack (now called Kali, and formerly Knoppix) wasn't at least an honorable mention. It was the only secure version also designed specifically for digital forensics and penetration testing.

Kali is usually categorized as offensive, not defensive - similar to Backbox.

True, but in practice I've found that at a certain point the distinction between them disappears. A thorough defense requires offensive measures to be employed as well -- such as pen testing to see what's exposed and vulnerable -- not merely the passive defensive measures. You simply asked about 'safest' distros, and it it strong in that regard, and as a 'privacy freak' (the article's choice of words) I can say I use it.
