Greg I was never a mortar man but we always carried a 60 or 2 per team. I loved them but yes they were scary as hell.
I had teams in Afghanistan that would routinely use soviet made mortars for base defense. There was always lots of ammo and tubes

We used old 60MM ammo in a sub caliber device inside of the 4.2 heavy mortars. This ammo was left over from Korean War which made life interesting. Mortar Platoon Leader was the most fun position I had moving up the ranks.

Greg I did not go to the Mortar range often but when I did we all had a big time. I guess I was just kind of fond of blowing stuff up hahaha
