Doubts about mistaken identity began to emerge when two history enthusiasts, Stephen Foley from Wexford in Ireland and Eric Krelle from Omaha, Nebraska said they had uncovered discrepancies between the man believed to be Bradley in the famous picture and other photos of him on the same day. Their theory was first disclosed by the Omaha World Herald Newspaper in 2014.

The historians said the man identified as Bradley was actually Franklin Sousley, who may himself have been wrongly identified in the photo. The man listed as Sousley is now believed to have been Harold Henry Schultz, who died in 1995.
