Who are we fooling? Joe isn't running this show and most of us know that. The crime is we don't know for certain, who (singular or plural) is. The very last thing we should do is close Gitmo... we should be populating it. And while we're at it, at least give the military a pay raise that meets or exceeds the inflation rate.

Funding ain't going to the joes. Never was intended to, and comparatively to other "budgetary needs", never will.

That's not what it's for. We are still living up to our Breton Woods obligations. That's where we agreed to "police the world" actually to guarantee commercial security, in exchange for, among other things, the dollar being the global reserve currency. We can withdraw from that, but there are lots of second and third order effects.

In my opinion, our last great Republican President warned us in his farewell speech:
"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."
