I didn't know I would incur another 4 year obligation at the time of transfer (back when I did it). I thought I could do it about when I was going to retire as long as I served 6 years. I would agree, if you're not going to use it yourself or your spouse, it makes sense to transfer it IMMEDIATELY.
The four years can be served in the reserves (I'm a reservist myself), so if you've done 6 years and only want to serve one or two more Active, you can continue for a few years in the reserves while you're building your civilian career to ensure you qualify for the transfer.
When I had a child, one of the things I worried about was how I was going to pay for her college, and this benefit takes a bit of the weight off my shoulders.
