The problem as I see it, is that the public officials that put these policies in place, never face repercussions for their actions. It would be interesting if they start cutting the Mayor's and council members pensions that implemented these horrible policies. I would venture that the current leaders may think twice if they know they will be held responsible in the future...

This problem didn't exist until we allowed public sector workers to unionize. They were then able to use the dues they collected to fund the campaigns of those Democrats who would "negotiate" sweeter deals in pay and benefits for public sector workers. I say "Democrats" specifically because this is a problem in states and cities where Democrats have held the reins of power for decades, all the decades since the public sector unions came into existence. Coincidence? I think not...
