Bongino was already on record in an interview stating how he hates his job. Sounds like he left the family behind and just rented a small place in DC, where he's probably working 7/12s.
Since 2011 he's just been a commentator and podcaster. Until he got nominated it had been 14 years since he had a real job with a boss and people he was responsible for, and those people were just one security detail, now he's 2IC for 38,000 people, I don't think it's a stretch to say he was in over his head with this job.

It's possible that there's really nothing left of substance in the Epstein files, it's also possible there is a lot more and he's angry that they are suppressing it. And either way, if he left now, not only would he be back home with his family, but the money would be rolling in on his podcast on just the Epstein content. He's looking at nothing but upside to walking away now.

No argument that he was well out of his depths for that job. That said, that job is really an intense position, and I suspect he was not prepared for the meat grinder I'm sure it is. I think your assessment of the up and down sides is spot on.

I hope they all quit at some point as the administration naturally deconstructs
