Having been out of the cockpit for many years, I know of what you are concerned about, but don't know how insidious the problem is. As the article states, our standard practice was to take all the automated systems off line on a regular basis to maintain our individual capabilities, but since my last flight in 88, I've heard that some of the aircraft are so squirrely without the automated systems that it is literally impossible to control them.
