Your military experience doesn’t define your next career.
This is an important lesson about life after the military and applies in multiple aspects of the transition. Here are two of the most critical:
1. Don’t feel constrained by your military specialty:
- You get to decide what comes next and aren’t limited by the duties you performed in uniform.
- If you want to do something different in civilian life, start planning early and obtain the education, training or experience needed.
2. Don’t feel entitled by your rank:
- Just because you were a senior (NCO or officer), doesn’t mean that you’re going to start in a senior (executive) role.
- If you aspire to a senior position with industry, understand that you might need to take a temporary step back to gain experience in the specific industry or field of interest.
You’re not alone and veterans are willing to help, so ask them to be mentors.
