Can NATO Survive Without The U.S.? Of course it can. However, Donald Trump wasn't saying he wanted to withdraw the US from the NATO Treaty. He said he wanted the rest of the NATO Countries to pay their fair share of the annual NATO costs. He also wants Japan and South Korea to kick in more money and troops for the defense of the Pacific theater.

However, once you draw down US forces in Europe to a certain level, say the point where you do not have enough available troop strength to prevent the successful invasion of a NATO country, you are relying on the much less expensive nuclear deterrence anyway. The real question is: are we (the United States) better off spending our limited US tax dollars funding the day to day administration of NATO forces in Europe or should we divert some of that money to upgrading US forces.
