I brought back a Chicom SKS from Vietnam and a .25 cal pocket automatic taken off a VC battalion commander. I simply applied for authorization and received it. Interestingly, the SKS was lost in transit and reappeared about a year later and was delivered to me at my duty station. Don't have any idea of where that little bugger wandered off to...

You can legally bring back antiques. I bought a Khyber Pass Martini Henry at the bazaar on BAF, when I first got in country. I got paperwork and brought it home.
However, as has already been posted bringing back any weapons firing modern ammunition is against the rules.

Lots of rules and paperwork. This was a big issue in Iraq. Some soldiers attempted to smuggle AK47 back and got caught
