The story of the Donner Party is equally as grisly and disturbing to read about.

People have resorted to cannibalism for extreme situations of duress where no communication or food deliveries could be made. People in cities under siege would consume all the edible material readily at hand fairly quickly such as Vicksburg, MS in 1863. Recipes for the proper seasoning of rat and making lentil soup, hold the ingredients made the rounds to all people. By the last weeks of the siege, all food in Vicksburg was gone and some of the people left alive had partaken of human flesh from the dead. Other documented cases include journeys made by small groups to inhospitable spots such as mountain tops, polar areas, and other unexplored areas not easily accessible by people; the record includes treks up mountains, polar passages, and people marooned by ship or airplane crashes and the like. Few of these occurrences have come under judicial review, even traumatic military cases, and survivors live with the truth that their personal survival came only through cannibalism.

Thanks TSgt Joe C. for letting us know that on January 7, 1901 confessed Colorado cannibal Alfred Packer was released from prison on parole after serving 18 years.
