Ouch!
First time I took a relative out in the S/V Lady Anne, he asked me why I was approaching the slip "so slow"...I responded, "I like to travel at the speed my insurance can keep up with".

The old "Super Gator" sometimes seemed to have a mind of her own when docking. If you made the turn into NAVSTA Norfolk at turns for 3, then went all stop as you lined up with the pier, and a slight backing bell by the time she was in line for port side-to, you'd have gone to just over bare steerageway. I'd stand on the port wing, look aft and cross my arms...right for left, left for right, and "walk" the inboard screw in to tie up aft.
